So for the Fourth of July Kris and I decided to brave the crowds and head down to D.C. to see the fireworks. Originally I planned this as a once in a lifetime type trip but really it ended up being handled so well we are even considering going back again next year.
We got to the Capitol building around 4 or 5ish and managed to find a seat right in front of the capitol...not on the grass (those seats were filled) but still with an amazing view no matter where you looked.....
The view from directly behind us |
The view of the Washington Monument from our seats |
The view of the stage where the National Symphony played |
The only musical part that bothered Kris was the playing of the 1812 overture...not that he dislikes the piece OR Tchaikovsky at all it's the fact that 99% of Americans seem to think it was composed for the Battle of 1812 when we began to fight for our independence...totally unaware it was actually written for the Russian victory of at the Battle of Borodino where they held off Napoleon's advancing army.
Around 9:15 the fireworks started over the Washington Monument. They can only be described as breathtaking. It's hard not to feel incredibly patriotic when you have the National Symphony playing while watching the fireworks.
Following the fireworks we joined the other people in attempt to make it back home. Surprisingly it only took us about 1.5 hours to get back which was not bad at all...the metro was only sardine crammed for a few stops so overall we had a very nice evening. I would definitely recommend this as an amazing way to spend the 4th!
On the way out.... |
Hi! This message is from Kristina and Julia. Julia misses you and has talked about you a lot this week. She loves the photos - especially the one with the cat in it. Emma is in bed but Julia wanted me to tell you that she misses you, too. I'll show Emma the photos tomorrow!
