St Stephen's Day 2011

Arguably one of my favorite holiday tradition every year is the barn's St. Stephen's Day party. We have been attending for approx. 17 years or so and haven't missed one yet. For those that don't know St. Stephen is the patron saint of horses (and a wide variety of other things if you google it!) and every year Rockin' V Stables properly honors this most holy of days. The day begins with a wide variety of horse games. At this point we have a pretty set rotation of games although in years past some interesting ones have been tried....such as Broomball (think polo but with a huge rubber ball and brooms instead of polo sticks). I'm sure there are some horses that are great at Broomball but from my  experience the vast majority of horses get a little freaked out at their rider carrying this large broom and waving it around everywhere. Here are some pictures of Rocket and I from this year:
Rocket when he's thinking about eating my boot

The Flag Race...there's actually another bucket at the other end of the arena and you have to move the flag between buckets without dropping it

Scudahoe....kind of like an obstacle course where you weave in and out of a bunch of cones, jump, weave some more, jump and cross the finish line. For those non-horse people reading this YES Rocket WAAAAY overjumped this jump, but man he looks good doing it!

After the horse games are over we bring in a priest to go around and bless the horses and the barn and the food.

My Dad always make sure to put in an appearance
After the blessing we head back up to the lounge to partake in an amazing feast. Overall it's always such a special day and we are so grateful for all Lin and Sam do every year to make it possible!
